The soldiers receive for every shot (or kills only?) they make experience points. They have ranks according to their skills:

• Greenhorn
• Rookie
• Trooper
• Warrior
• Veteran
• Elite
• Champion
• Hero
• Superhero
• Overlord

Soldiers progress in their different stats such as: Health, time units, discovery, strength, etc. If you look at the soldier in the equip menu, you will see arrows indicating in which areas the soldier made progress.
